Nigerians have spent approximately ₦1.7 trillion on data services provided by MTN Nigeria in the first half of 2026, highlighting sustained demand for internet connectivity despite prevailing economic challenges. The telecom operator disclosed this in its unaudited financial results for the six months ended June 30, 2026, filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited. According to the results, MTN’s data revenue climbed to ₦1.699 trillion during the review period, compared with ₦1.229 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, representing a 38.3 per cent year-on-year increase. Data services remained the company’s largest revenue driver, ahead of voice services, which generated ₦897.14 billion, while SMS services contributed ₦112.68 billion. Overall, MTN Nigeria recorded ₦2.99 trillion in revenue for the first half of 2026, up from ₦2.38 trillion posted in the same period last year. About 300 students of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Janbulo in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State were trapped in their classrooms on Thursday after the staircase leading to a one-storey classroom block collapsed during school hours. The incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. while students were attending lessons in two upstairs classrooms, according to the school principal, Hajiya Jamila Mustafa Mai Nasara. She said panic erupted after the collapse, prompting teachers and school authorities to rush to the scene. “We heard shouting from the one-storey building where about 300 students were taking lessons in two upstairs classrooms. We rushed to the area and discovered that the staircase had collapsed,” she said. The principal explained that members of staff quickly mobilised and brought a ladder, which was used to safely evacuate all the trapped students from the building. Netflix is facing a $105 million lawsuit after a master copy of the unreleased Nicolas Cage’s thriller, Fortitude was allegedly stolen from its Hollywood offices during the film’s acquisition process. The legal action was filed by Swiss billionaire, Simon Afram, who financed and produced the $45 million movie. Afram claims the streaming giant breached its contractual obligations after an unencrypted digital cinema package (DCP) containing the film disappeared just days after it was delivered to Netflix for review. According to the lawsuit, the master copy was hand-delivered to Netflix’s Hollywood headquarters on June 15 at the company’s request. Executives reportedly screened the film the following day as part of discussions over a possible acquisition.   A Kano State High Court has sentenced a newlywed, Saudat Jibril to death by hanging for the murder of her husband, Salisu Idris, barely nine days after their wedding. The judgment was delivered by Justice Maryam Sabo on Thursday, July 30, 2026, after the court found the defendant guilty of culpable homicide. It was gathered that the incident which drew widespread attention in the state occurred in May 2025 in Farawa, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, where the couple had been living following their marriage. During the trial, the prosecution, led by the Kano State Government’s counsel, Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, called three witnesses to establish its case against the defendant. The defence counsel, Barrister Abdulfatah Muhammad, presented Saudat Jibril as a witness in her own defence. In her ruling, Justice Sabo held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and accepted the evidence presented by the state.

Nigerian musician, Douglas Jack Agu, popularly known as Runtown has suffered a major legal setback after a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, ruled that he remains an artiste under his former record label, Eric Many Entertainment. The  court held that Runtown remains bound by his recording agreement with the label and ordered him to pay ₦319 million in total. According to the court order dated July 16, 2026, Justice O. A. Musa ruled that the recording agreement executed between Eric Many Entertainment and Runtown in June 2016 remains valid and binding, holding that it “has not been terminated in accordance with the provisions of the agreement” and continues to subsist between both parties. The  court ordered Runtown, who was initially signed by Eric Many Entertainment in May 2014, to pay ₦53 million in costs and damages. Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has released the sum of ₦25 million to support the medical treatment of veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Nwosu. The  payment was made directly to the hospital where the actress is receiving treatment, according to the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Tourism and Entertainment, Dr Justice Okey Martins, popularly known as J. Martins. In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, J. Martins said the payment was made on Wednesday after Governor Otti directed that the funds be transferred to the hospital. “Yesterday before the close of work, His Excellency @alexottiofr, our pragmatic leader, fulfilled his promise by directing a ₦25 million payment to the hospital’s account where our Nollywood legendary actress, Mrs. Ngozi Nwosu, is receiving treatment,” he wrote. A barber, simply identified as Emeka, has been nabbed by men of the Abia State Police Command, after a clay pot stuffed with human hairs was found inside his one-room apartment in Umuahia. The  barber, who was said to be popular in Umuahia for his stylish barbing skills, was arrested on Tuesday after his neighbour, Mr. Johnson Ikenga had lodged a report to the police complaining that Emeka was threatening him. A search was reportedly conducted by policemen in the suspect’s house during the arrest, which led to the discovery of the pot filled with human hair and other fetish items. When  interrogated, the barber confessed that the pot belonged to him, but could not explain what he used the items for, or where he sourced the hairs. But many residents are claiming that the hairs found inside the pot may have belonged to customers who patronized the suspect. Nigerians on social media have expressed divided opinions over calls to boycott the Grammy award-winning South African singer, Tyla Laura Seethal, popularly known as Tyla, who is scheduled to hold a concert in Lagos, with many linking the event to renewed outrage over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. The  debate followed the announcement of the Grammy award-winning singer A*POP’s World Tour, which includes a performance in Lagos on 22nd of December, 2026.
