In a chilling incident, a Gutu mother lost her two children at a stroke on Tuesday morning when a mentally challenged man forced himself into a kitchen where the minors had sought refugee and stoned both to death.
Sunungurai Charova (29) of Mazonde Village under Chief Gutu cannot imagine her loss after her daughters Shallom and Ruvarashe Chingovo who are six months and three years respectively were murdered by Tauya Tafirei Bonda (33).
Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhehwa confirmed the incident and urged people with mentally challenged relatives to take care of them and make sure that they take their medications. Bonda from Bonda Village who is mentally challenged arrived at Chingovo’s homestead at 8am on Tuesday and found Charova with her mother in law Felistus Mharire (67).
Mharire warned Bonda not to come at Chingovo’s homestead at night like he did the previous Friday. Bonda then left saying he was going to look for his cattle. Around 10am, Bonda came back holding a stone in his hands, Charova sensed danger and rushed into her bedroom and told her seven year old son to take Shallom and Ruvarashe into the kitchen. The seven year old then went with the two infants into the kitchen and closed the door. Bonda pushed the door and got inside with his stone. He struck the six months baby Shallom on the forehead whilst the seven year old boy was holding her.
Bonda went out of the kitchen and took another stone which he used to strike Ruvarashe on the forehead. The two kids bled profusely from the nose and ears. Bonda walked away after the act. Bonda was taken to Gutu Police Station and the deceased’s bodies were taken to Gutu Mission Hospital for post-mortem.
