60-Year-Old Catholic Priest Burnt To Death In Nnewi


A 60-year-old Catholic priest, Rv Fr.Edmond Nwagbala of St. Peter Claver Catholic Parish Nnew ichi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State was early hours of Saturday burnt to death. The Parish Priest lost his life during the fire outbreak and was burnt beyond recognition inside  his room at same premises. He was at the room where the fire incident emanated.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Anambra Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed who confirmed the incident, said the cause of the inferno which started about 04:00am is yet to be ascertained. “Today Nov. 16 at about 04:00am, there was a fire outbreak at St.Peter Claver Catholic Parish Nnew ichi in Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State. ” The inferno which cause is yet to be ascertained affected part of the Church residential building. As a result the parish priest one Rv Fr.Edmond Nwagbala ‘m’ aged about 60yrs was burnt beyond recognition inside  his room at same premises,” he said.

Mohammed said the police  patrol teams attached to Otolo Division led by the DPO visited the scene and Fire Service department was equally alerted,they responded promptly and put off the fire before it escalates. According to him, the victim was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but certified dead on arrival by the medical doctor and corpse deposited at the mortuary for postmortem examination.  He said the Commissioner of Police CP John Abang, had ordered for a discreet investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.

Also confirming the incident, Chief Fire Officer of Anambra State Fire Service, Engr. Martin Agbili, said at about 0346 hours of Saturday, it received a distress call of a fire outbreak at the Parish House of St. Peter’s Catholic Church Nnewi Ichi Uruagu.
“Our men were deployed to the fire scene and we have contained the situation.
“The Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Edmond Nwagbara lost his life during the fire outbreak. He was at the room where the fire incident emanated.
Agbili said the cause of the fire incident was unknown and as at the time of this report, the corpse has been taking away by ambulance.
