Court Orders Omoyele Sowore’s Remand In Kuje Prison For Trial On Defamation Of President Tinubu

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, June 22, 2026, ordered the remand of the Nigerian Human Rights activist and two-time presidential candidate under the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore in Kuje prison.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, in a short ruling, ordered Sowore to be kept in prison pending the hearing and determination of his motion for stay of the order for revocation of his bail and bench warrant. 

Justice Umar also dismissed Sowore’s earlier application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on the ground of alleged bias.

The judge then adjourned the matter until June 24 the hearing of the application for stay. 

The motion for stay was filed by the defendant’s new lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

Omoyele Sowore arrived at the court in the company of members of his group with placards. 

Justice Umar had, on June 16, revoked a bail granted to Sowore following his failure to appear in court for his trial.

Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling on an oral application made by the lawyer to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), also issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in a post he made on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.

Ibom Air Passenger Remanded In Prison

  Comfort Emmanson, a passenger of Ibom Air who had a fight with officials has been arraigned and remanded in custody.   A video of her in a flight inbound Lagos from Uyo has since gone viral.   The Special Adviser to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, who revealed this, said Emmanson has been remanded in the Kirikiri correctional facility.   Moshood disclosed this in a post on X on Monday shortly after the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), said enforcement action will soon become more frequent in Nigerian airports as unruly conduct by passengers becomes rampant.
