DSS Arrests Suspects Behind 2023 Abduction, Murder Of Neurologist Prof. Ephraim In Cross River State

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested the leader of the gang responsible for the kidnapping and murder of a professor of Neurology, Ekanem Philip Ephraim, who was abducted and killed in 2023.

This was disclosed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, in a report on Monday.

Zagazola disclosed that the prime suspect, identified as Patrick Essien Etim, 23, was arrested alongside his accomplice, Bassey Antiha Asuquo, 40, on Saturday at a medical facility in Cross River State, where they were allegedly planning to kidnap another senior medical professional.

He said the DSS had been tracking the kidnapping syndicate since July 2023, when gunmen posing as patients abducted Professor Ephraim from her private clinic.

The suspects reportedly confessed to abducting and killing the professor after collecting multiple ransom payments from her family.

“It has been two years of torment for her loved ones, not knowing what happened to the Professor. I believe that, with this arrest, her family and loved ones will be able to finally have some peace and the much-needed closure that they deserve,” the report quoted a source as saying.

The source further revealed that another suspect, Isaac Ekpeyong, was also arrested, and added that the suspects confessed to involvement in other kidnapping operations and acts of vandalism of electricity cables.

Professor Ephraim was abducted on July 13, 2023, by armed men who pretended to be patients at her clinic located along Atimbo Road in Calabar.

Her abduction triggered widespread protests across Cross River State, led by the state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

The NMA had embarked on an indefinite strike that paralysed healthcare services in the state for more than a week, demanding urgent government action to secure the professor’s release.

“This huge breakthrough underscores the commitment of the DSS in reverting to covertness in its operations and restoring public safety across the country,” the source added.
