Nonso Nkwa Accuses Imo State Police Tiger Base Of Plotting His Assassination Over Rights Abuses Reports

An investigative journalist, radio presenter and Human Rights activist based in Imo State, Theodore Chinonso Uba popularly known as Nonso Nkwa, has alleged that senior officers of the Imo State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, popularly known as Tiger Base, are planning to assassinate him over his reports on alleged human rights abuses committed by the unit.

Uba is the President of the Nchekwa Ndi Ogbenye Foundation (Protect The Weak International Foundation). He also hosts a radio program called Ogene Ndi Igbo on Toast 90.3 FM which focuses on Igbo society, culture and politics.

In a statement dated Monday, December 22, 2025, Uba alleged that “ACP Oladimeji & his boys” were plotting to kill him because of his work exposing what he described as atrocities linked to the Tiger Base unit.

“As an investigative journalist, radio presenter and Human Rights activist based in Imo, I have always dedicated my life to defending the people and telling them the truth no matter whose ox is gored,” he said.

Uba accused the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command, code-named Tiger Base, of being “notorious for chronic human rights violations,” including “alleged extrajudicial killings of Imo youths profiled as IPOB members, organ harvesting, forced disappearance and extortion running into millions of naira.”

He said he began raising alarm over the alleged abuses as far back as 2021.

According to him, he intensified public awareness following reports by rights groups, including allegations against specific police officers.

“I joined in creating more awareness of the alleged atrocities committed by Tiger Base operatives including but not limited to the following: ACP Oladimeji, Inspectors Moses Ogarabe, Chidi Igwe, Chidiebere Nwosu, Blessing Uchendu, etc.,” he said.

Uba further alleged that since the release of a report by the Coalition Against Tiger Base Impunity, threats to his life had escalated.

“My life has been threatened by ACP Oladimeji and his cohorts,” he said.

According to him, he has received intelligence pointing to an assassination plot against him.

“I was reliably informed that ACP Ola and those earlier mentioned are planning to assassinate me because of my stand against their atrocities,” the statement read.

The journalist also alleged digital and communication surveillance following his activism.

“Prior to this, my Facebook profile and page with over 500,000 followers were disabled mysteriously till date,” he said.

“My two phone numbers have been bugged and my private calls infiltrated,” he added.

Uba linked these developments to his campaign against the police unit.

“All these happened since I championed the Tiger Base Must Fall campaign in Imo,” he said.

He called on the international community to intervene, warning that his life and that of his family were in danger.

“I am therefore calling on international communities, Amnesty International and United Nations to investigate this assassination threat to my life by ACP Oladimeji and his boys at the Tiger Base, Imo State Police Command,” he said.

“My life and those of my family members are no longer safe in Imo State because I am a journalist doing my job.”
