ANAMBRA MASSACRE: Slain 11 People Laid To Rest In Ebonyi State

Anambra Massacre

The remains of eleven people killed in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, were laid to rest on Thursday in their respective communities in Ebonyi State.

The eleven casualties are:

Ikechukwu Nwafor, Ebenezer Nwigbo, Uche Alegu, Monday Ofoke, Chidera Utobo, Akam Okechukwu, Sunday Offim, Sunday Ugada, Clement Ofoke, Chidera Nwogbala and Sunday Nweke.

They hailed from Izzi, Ikwo and Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

They were killed on May 30, 2025, by gunmen while they were holding an Ebonyi indigenes’ meeting in Ogboji, Anambra State.

Seventeen people were reportedly shot by the gunmen during the attack, leading to 11 deaths, while six people sustained injuries.

Tears flowed as the caskets of the deceased were lined up for a state funeral service on Thursday at Unity Square, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

In his sermon, Catholic Priest, Rev Fr. Joseph Orji, condemned the killings, describing it as unprovoked and barbaric.

He said the state has never recorded such an incident since its inception and declared that the perpetrators committed a heinous crime and they will face judgment before God.

He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for giving the deceased a befitting burial and prayed to God to grant them peaceful rest.

He said, “Your Excellency, we thank you for bringing all of us to this unity square. The reasons why all of us are gathered here at the unity square, are symbolic.

“And one of them is a symbolic event that has taken place amongst us. It has never been in our history that a peaceful group sitting together for their own well-being, struggling to make ends meet, and suddenly, somebody comes in to wipe out the generation of eleven people.

“It is a historic, sad event that occurred. The event could be joyful, but this particular Ogboji incident is a sad event. We thank the authorities for immortalizing their names by bringing them to Unity Square and giving them a state burial.

“It goes a long way to show the unity of the state, and our state is so united that in grief, we are one, in joy, we are one.”

Governor Nwifuru expressed sadness over the persistent killings of Ebonyi people in Anambra State, which he said got to its climax wth the recent killings.

“The way our people are being killed in Anambra State is unacceptable, and it must stop.

The governor also rejected claims allegedly made by the Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area in Anambra that the killings were an internal Ebonyi affair. He described it as provocative and “without any proof.”

“The preliminary investigation showed that those who massacred our people were not speaking the Ebonyi language, but up to date, no arrest has been made. None of them has been arrested,”
 he lamented.

To support the bereaved families, Governor Nwifuru announced ₦10 million for the children of one victim whose wife also died after the incident, and ₦5 million each for the children of the remaining ten victims, bringing the total support package to ₦60 million.

He urged the families to invest the funds in businesses that would sustain the orphans, while advising them not to return to Anambra for safety reasons.
