Over 1,800 people have as of Tuesday afternoon signed a petition demanding for accountability from Marlian Records regarding the revenues generated from the work of the late Nigerian Afrobeat artiste, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad who died recently.

Marlian Records is a Nigerian record label owned by Nigerian artiste, Azeez Adeshina Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley.

The campaigners noted that Mohbad's music had continued to gain immense recognition and popularity, even reaching the prestigious Billboard music chart within just one week of his demise.

The petition pointed out that Mohbad was in a legal dispute with Marlian Music in pursuit of his unreleased songs and unpaid royalties prior to his passing.

The advocates explained that with his posthumous success, the responsibility to honour his memory and ensure his family's well-being is more paramount, demanding that necessary measures be taken to honour Mohbad's memory and safeguard his legacy.

The petition reads in part; “Nigerian Afrobeats artiste, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, professionally known as Mohbad tragic departure on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, has not only left a void in the music industry but has also triggered serious questions regarding the treatment of artistes affiliated with your record label, Marlian Music.

“Despite his passing, Mohbad's music has continued to gain immense recognition and popularity, even reaching the prestigious Billboard music chart within just one week of his demise. This undeniable resurgence of interest in his music has brought to the forefront an urgent need for accountability regarding the revenues generated from his work during this period.

“It has also come to our attention that Mohbad was in a legal dispute with Marlian Music in pursuit of his unreleased songs and unpaid royalties prior to his passing. The allegations of mistreatment and hostilities against Mohbad had already deeply unsettled and disheartened music enthusiasts worldwide. Now, with his posthumous success, the responsibility to honor his memory and ensure his family's well-being is even more paramount.

“We firmly believe that artistes, such as Mohbad, are entitled to equitable, just, and transparent treatment both during their careers and in the aftermath of their passing. In light of these developments, we demand that Marlian Music promptly addresses this matter and ensures the attainment of justice and accountability. Our specific requests are as follows:

“Prompt Release of Mohbad's Songs: We earnestly request the expedited release of all of Mohbad's unreleased musical works to the public, preserving his artistic legacy and providing solace to his devoted fans.

“Accountability for Recent Revenues: It is of the utmost importance that a transparent and thorough audit of the revenues generated from Mohbad's music since his passing be conducted. The results of this audit should be made available to the public, and any revenues rightfully owed to his family should be transferred to them, extending vital support during this challenging period.

“The music industry serves as a cornerstone of Nigeria's cultural heritage and global recognition. It is our collective duty to safeguard, nurture, and stand by artists throughout their careers and beyond. By addressing the concerns underscored by Mohbad's tragic case and ensuring accountability for recent revenues, we can work towards fostering a music industry that is more just, compassionate, and inclusive for all stakeholders.

“We demand that necessary measures be taken to honour Mohbad's memory and safeguard his legacy. By doing so, you can affirm your commitment to justice,” it added.
