Legendary Nigerian Musician, Victor Uwaifo Dies At 80
The news of his death was shared on social media by his son Peter Uwaifo.
“Daddy. Why Did you leave us now? Prof sir Victor UWAIFO has gone to rest. Black Saturday for me now,” the young Uwaifo wrote with 34 sad emojis.
The announcement followed tributes from many prominent Nigerians including the President, Major General Muhammdu Buhari (retd.), who said the musician left a “legacy of successes in many areas of life, including academia and administration.”
The President also noted “that Sir Uwaifo brought to Nigeria through his international tours and the active role he played in national development, returning to school to get a first degree at age 54 with First Class honours, Masters degree at 56, and a doctorate at 77.”
No date has been announced for his burial ceremony.

1.) Prof. Sir Victor Efosa Uwaifo was born on March 1, 1941, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
2.) He studied graphics at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos and got a Bachelors degree and Master’s degree from the University of Benin.
3.) A First Class graduate of UNIBEN, his undergraduate project of ‘A king on a horse’ is a signature arts poster at the Ekenwan Campus of the university.
4.) He served as a lecturer in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at UNIBEN.
5.) He was a Member of the Order of the Niger as honoured by the Federal Government in 1983 and had been invited to the State House by four Presidents and Heads of State of Nigeria.
6.) Uwaifo was invited by the United Nations Staff Day International Committee to perform during the UN Golden Jubilee celebration in 1995.
7.) He once served as the Honorable Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism and Member of the State Executive Council in Edo State.
8.) Fondly called Guitar Boy, Uwaifo’s songs, Joromi, Akwete, Mammy Water, Do Amen Do etc, have been remixed by recent pop artistes in Nigeria.
9.) He made history in 1996 when he was presented with the first Golden Record in Nigeria, West Africa and Africa by Philips for his hit song Joromi.
10.) His hobbies were swimming, bodybuilding, gaming, reading and writing.
