Cape Verde Make History, Qualify For World Cup For The First Time

  Cape Verde has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in their history.   This comes after they won their World Cup qualifiers group.   The country reached the milestone for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time ever after defeating Eswatini 3-0 on Monday, October 13, in Praia.   The victory secured the island nation’s top spot in Group D with 23 points, four clear of second-placed Cameroon, Africa’s most frequent World Cup participant.   Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah has given explanation why he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).   According to him, the reason is because the PDP did not recognise the voice of his people.   Speaking to journalists shortly after announcing his defection during a state-wide broadcast, the governor dismissed suggestions that his action amounted to a betrayal of the PDP, under which he was elected.   “This is not a betrayal; it is also not abandonment. “It is more about understanding that I was entrusted with the people’s mandate by the people, and it is also a responsibility on me to carry that same mandate on a platform that will best serve the people,”  he said.   The governor explained that his decision followed consultations and was rooted in the belief that the PDP platform could no longer “serve the people optimally.”   “We have people who, under a particular platform, gave me their mandate ...

Madagascar President Flees The Country As Soldiers Join Anti-Government Protests

  The President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, has reportedly fled the country.   Rajoelina fled on a French military aircraft, hours before he was scheduled to address the people.    French state radio RFI reported on Monday, October 13, that the president, who also has French citizenship, had been flown out of the capital, Antananarivo, after a deal with President Emmanuel Macron. It added that he may have headed for Dubai.    He had been due to speak to the nation at 7 PM (1600 GMT), according to a statement from the presidency on Facebook.   Rajoelina, 51, was first president from 2009 to 2014 before returning to power in 2023.    He became increasingly isolated after losing the support of a key army unit that joined thousands of youths activists known as “Gen Z Madagascar” to protest against corruption and poverty. Hamas Releases All Living Israeli Hostages

  The Israeli Defense Forces has confirmed that Hamas has released all 20 living Israeli hostages.   This is part of a landmark prisoner exchange deal with Israel.   IDF gave the confirmation on Monday morning, October 13, stating that the hostages had safely crossed back into Israel from Gaza, marking the end of a tense and emotional standoff that had gripped the world for weeks.   According to the IDF, the freed hostages were immediately received by Israeli medical teams for initial evaluation before being flown to hospitals across the country for further treatment and reunification with their families.   Among those released are Alon Ohel, Guy Gilboa-Dalal, and Omri Miran, three of the first hostages to be freed earlier in the day. A  list of all the 175 persons granted presidential pardon and clemency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been made public. Those pardoned include, late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, nationalist Herbert Macaulay, Major General Mamman Vatsa, and Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death for killing her husband.   According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday, the decision followed recommendations by the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).   The list, released on Saturday, is divided into six parts: pardoned, posthumous pardon (including the Ogoni Nine), victims of the Ogoni Nine honoured, presidential clemency (clemency beneficiaries), list of inmates recommended for reduced term of imprisonment, and list of inmates on death row reduced to life imprisonment.   Below I...

Hamas Begins Handing Over Israeli Hostages

  Hamas has released first seven of the remaining 20 living Israeli hostages.   This is coming after more than 783 days in captivity in Gaza, according to the Israeli military.   Under a ceasefire agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump after two years of war, Hamas is due to release all surviving hostages on Monday in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.   The releases came as Trump headed to the region for a peace summit, having declared the war "over".   "According to information provided by the Red Cross, seven hostages have been transferred into their custody, and are on their way to IDF and ISA forces in the Gaza Strip,"  the Israeli military and security service said.    "The IDF is prepared to receive additional hostages who are expected to be transferred to the Red Cross later on."   In Tel Aviv, hundreds of people gathered on Hostages Square erupted in joy as news broke of the first releases.   Among them,...

Lagos State Government Re-Arraigns Convicted Kidnapper Evans Over Alleged Murder Of Two Police Officers

  Convicted billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans has been re-arraigned before the Lagos High Court in Ikeja over the alleged murder of two police officers.   He was re-arraigned by the Lagos State Government on Monday, 13th of October, 2025.   Evans appeared in court alongside his co-defendant, Joseph Emeka, where they were charged with a five-count information bordering on murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.   Both defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them before Justice A.O. Ogala.   Evans, who gained notoriety for his high-profile kidnapping operations, is currently standing trial in five separate criminal cases involving kidnapping and murder.   He has already been convicted in two of those cases.   The re-arraignment comes just a few days after President Bola Tinubu granted presidential clemency to some convicted criminals across the country.

  Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, an international evangelist and the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, is reportedly dead. The  news of Ukpai’s alleged demise is currently making the rounds on social media. Prophet Joel Ogebe posted a cryptic message on X, stating: “A giant has gone to be with the Lord. My father, my father, the chariot of Israel. Heaven rejoices. Uyo.” Although Prophet Joe  Ogebe did not mention any names, the post quickly sparked reactions online, with some users linking it to Rev. Ukpai, the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, a prominent non-denominational ministry based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Veteran Labour Activist, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, Dies After Hit-And-Run In Ogun State

  65-year-old veteran labour activist, Comrade Abiodun Aremu has died.   He was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Ota, Ogun State.    The renowned activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF) — the umbrella body for pro-labour civil society organisations — was reportedly knocked down by a vehicle while crossing the road to his residence in Ota, Ogun State, around 6 PM on Sunday, October 12, 2025.   He was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors tried to resuscitate him with oxygen, but he was later confirmed dead.    Aremu was initially scheduled to be buried on Monday, October 13.    However, the family of the late foremost activist, Abiodun Aremu, has agreed with the Labour Movement to shift his burial to October 23 to enable the movement give him a befitting farewell.    In a statement issued on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Movement, the former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trad...
