Court Blocks Deportation Of Nigerian PhD Student Amid Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

Image
Despite heightened immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, a U.S. federal court has temporarily halted the deportation of Matthew Ariwoola, a Nigerian PhD student in chemistry at the University of South Carolina. The ruling comes in response to a controversial move by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which revoked Ariwoola’s student visa over a case of mistaken identity tied to a 2023 criminal warrant issued in Georgia—a state the student maintains he has never visited. The visa revocation on April 8, 2025, abruptly disrupted Ariwoola’s academic journey. He was banned from attending classes, suspended from his research, and faced imminent deportation. In a bid to salvage his education and legal status, Ariwoola sought help from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of South Carolina. The organization promptly filed a lawsuit challenging the DHS decision.  On April 18—the same day the suit was filed—District Judge Jacquelyn Austin granted a 14-day tempora...

See Photo Of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan In Court Below: The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has granted bail in the sum of ₦50 million to suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Chizoba Orji, rejected application the Federal Government made for the defendant who was arraigned on a three-count charge, to be remanded in prison custody pending the determination of the case against her. Justice Orji held that she found no reason to deny the defendant bail, saying there was sufficient evidence that she is willing to face her trial. Consequently, aside from the ₦50 million, the court held that the defendant must produce one surety who must be a person of integrity that owns a landed property in Abuja. The court based its decision on section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, as well as section 163 and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. The case was su...

“Why Pastor Paul Adefarasin’s Stun Gun Is Illegal” — Lagos State Commissioner Of Police

Image
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Owohunwa Jimoh, has stated that under Nigerian law, pointing a stun gun at someone constitutes a criminal offence, regardless of the device's non-lethal nature. Adefarasin was recently invited for questioning over a viral video showing him with an object that many believed was a firearm. The Lagos police have since confirmed it was a stun gun. “Nothing is an offence under the law, except what the law states to be an offence. Even under the Fire Arms Act, if you fashion out anything that is not metal, like wood,  and you make it look like a gun, and you use that guise to take possession of property from another person, you have committed armed robbery. “So, pointing a stun gun at another individual and sending that threat and fe...
