Groom, 5 Wedding Guests Die, 8 Hospitalized In Mysterious Circumstances In Enugu Community
Residents of Akutara village in Adani community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State have been thrown into mourning following the mysterious death of six villagers. The tragedy happened on Saturday 27th of August.
Community sources told some reporters that the deceased attended a traditional marriage ceremony of 31-year-old Obinna Dike at Obollor-Eke in Udenu Council Area on August 26.
"After the ceremony, they returned and continued with the celebration. Regrettably, on the following morning, being Saturday, August 27, none of them came out of the room where they slept.
"Disturbed by the development, some residents broke their doors and six persons including the bridegroom were found dead with foamy discharge from their mouths. Eight others were found unconscious," said one of the sources.
The eight people who were unconscious have been moved to the hospital, a community source said.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State police command has confirmed the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmed Ammani, in a statement issued through the command's spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, ordered the state's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The commissioner also directed the CID to unravel why eight persons were hospitalized under the same strange circumstances in Akutara village in Adani community of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the command received a report on August 27 at about 9:30 am alleging the sudden and unnatural death and hospitalization of eight people in Akutara village in Adani community.
The police spokesman said the commissioner had already commiserated with the families and friends of the deceased and urged residents of the community to remain peaceful and support the police with the necessary information in the investigation.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that one of the confirmed deceased persons, Obinna Dike, 31, attended his own traditional marriage ceremony at Obollor-Eke in Udenu council area on August 26 with his relatives and other victims of the incident.
“They, thereafter, went back home and continued with the celebration.
“However, the following morning, none of them came out of the room where they slept.
“This caused the door to be forced open, with all of them in the room found to be unconscious with foamy discharge from their mouths,” the police spokesman said.
He said they were immediately moved to the hospital, where six of them were confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Ndukwe noted that eight others had been responding to treatment within a hospital in the area.
