Federal Government Suspends Sachet Alcohol Ban, Orders NAFDAC To Halt Enforcement

  The Federal Government has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to immediately suspend all enforcement actions related to the ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle products. The offices of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), and National Security Adviser (ONSA), in a joint intervention, cited grave concerns over economic stability and potential security threats as reasons for the directive. The statement warned that continued enforcement, in the absence of a fully implemented National Alcohol Policy, could “destabilize communities, worsen unemployment, and trigger avoidable security challenges”. The United States Department of Homeland Security has revealed plans to deport an additional 18 Nigerians included on its “worst-of-the-worst” criminal list. The development comes barely one week after 79 Nigerians convicted of various offences were marked for deportation.   Senator Nenadi Usman, the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), is now poised to officially take over the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. Usman will become the first female National Chairman of a major Nigerian political party. The secretariat, which is located at the Utako District, Abuja, was hitherto occupied by the Julius Abure-led faction of the party until the recent decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), officially recognized Usman and her team.   The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal on Monday, February 9, 2026, held that the Nigerian Senate acted within its constitutional powers in suspending the Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. A three-member panel of Justices of the Appellate Court unanimously ruled that it was within the powers of the Senate to have suspended Uduaghan for misconduct. The Court added that the Kogi lawmaker was unable to prove that parliamentary privilege or her constitutional rights were breached as a result of her suspension from the Senate. Nigerian youths are currently gathering in Abuja for the “Occupy National Assembly” protest, following the Senate’s rejection of the electronic transmission of election results. There is heavy security presence at the scene, with personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. The demonstration is against the backdrop of the Senate’s position on the electronic transmission of election results. Recall that the Senate on Wednesday reportedly turned down a proposed change to Clause 60, sub-section 3 of the Electoral Amendment Bill that sought to make electronic transmission of election results compulsory. At the time of filing this report, the protesters had begun their march from the Federal Secretariat, heading towards the National Assembly gate.

Danjuma Bagu, one of the survivors of the deadly attack on the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, said he has been unable to reach his family.
