Nigerian Electricity Workers Move To Shut Down National Grid Over Police Harassment Of NLC President, Joe Ajaero

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) in Nigeria have vowed to shut down the National Grid, should the Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero get arrested by the Nigerian police.

This position was communicated by General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Dominic Igwebike.

In a related development, the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees, also vowed to shut down telecommunications services if the NLC President is arrested by the Nigerian Police. 

Mary Nwosu, General Secretary of the Union stated this in a separate communique issued to it members.

According to a notice to members, the NUEE, consisting of workers in Transmission Company of Nigeria said: “That upon any arrest of the NLC President or any other Labour Leader, all workers are to down tools from 12 midnightf 21 August 2024”.

Similarly, NUPTE, workers in the postal and telecoms sector in Nigeria followed the direction of NUEE.

The NLC on its own had ordered that workers in the country  should down tools should the Nigerian Police go ahead to arrest Ajaero or if anything happens to any of the Union leaders.

It was earlier gathered that the Nigerian Police had extended an invitation to Ajaero for questioning over allegations bothering on terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime.

The invitation, detailed in an official letter, required Ajaero to appear for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at the IRT Complex in Guzape District, Abuja.

According to the letter, the investigation has identified Ajaero as a person of interest in the case.

“You are therefore invited to interview the undersigned on Tuesday 20th Aug, 2024 by 10:00hrs prompt,” the letter stated.

The letter further warned that failure to comply could lead to a warrant for Ajaero's arrest. 

“Be informed that in the event of failing to honour this letter, this office will have no alternative than to activate a warrant of arrest against you,” it added.

The Nigeria Labour Congress had requested for an extension of time for its President to honor the invitation, seeking a August 29th date instead through its lawyers at the Femi Falana chambers.

The Nigerian police are yet to react to the request for extension of date which the President will be interrogated  as of the time of this report.

Nigerians Face New Financial Strain As Moniepoint, Opay And Others Impose N50 Electronic Money Transfer Levy

  There are more burdens on Nigerians as Moniepoint, Opay and other Fintech banks and financial services have imposed fresh N50 charges known as Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL), on customers. It was gathered that the customers of Moniepoint and Opay will start paying the charges from September 9, 2024, according to a recent notice by the banks. The new levy is in addition to the recent Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) pump price hike to N855 and N897 by Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail outlets. The  development means Nigerians using Opay and Moniepoint will have to pay N50 charges for any electronic transactions of N10,000 and above. The Fintech companies blamed the charges on a directive from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).   The  Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced one Courage Ikpaka to two years imprisonment for duping a United States citizen, Mrs Yvelte M. Thompson of $53,000 by impersonating Nigerian musician, Chinedu Okoli popularly known as Flavour N’abania.   A Nigerian nurse, identified as Ruth Auta has been sentenced to three years in jail for causing the death of her ten-week-old baby. The nurse was sentenced by Bolton Crown Court in the UK. It was gathered that the Nigerian woman left the deceased baby Joshua Akerele in her nurse's accommodation for eight hours so she could work her shift on December 20, 2022.
