How To Keep Snakes Away From Homes Without Spending Much Money

Image
Snakes are scaly, legless creatures that slither into your yard and sometimes even your home. While your first instinct may be to run the other way, there are several benefits to keeping them around. Snakes keep rodent populations under control, with a single snake able to eat 3 to 4 mice at one time. They also eat moles, voles, insects and even fish. When Do Snakes Come Out? Snakes are more commonly encountered when temperatures average between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit; usually during the spring and throughout the summer. They are most active in early morning and late afternoon, as summer temperatures are often too hot for them to be out in during the hottest times of day. Snake activity will pick back up again in late summer and early fall before they go into hibernation or brumation. Brumation is more common in southern states where the climate is warmer and snow is less likely. Snakes don’t actually sleep in brumation but rather their bodies adjust ...

Cocoyam And Unripe Plantain Good For Diabetic Patients

Image
Unripe plantain and cocoyam flour have always been valued in folkloric medicine because of its ability to lower blood sugar. Now, experts have established the potentials of cocoyam or unripe plantain in the lowering of high levels of fats, such as cholesterol, in the blood.  In a new study, researchers found cocoyam and unripe plantain helping to ensure low levels of blood and fat, and as such helpful in the management of diabetes and its complication. However, a combination of cocoyam and unripe plantain do not confer the same protection against diabetes and its complications as either cocoyam or unripe plantain flour.  Good blood sugar control can help prevent or slow the progression of some of the main medical complications of diabetes. The risk of complications of diabetes directly increase with increased sugar and fat blood levels. They are bad for health. When blood sugar rises in non-diabetic people, the body produces insulin. It helps the body move sugar ou...

Plagues Of Locust Destroys About 70,000 Hectares Of Farmlands In Somalia And Ethiopia

Image
Desert locusts are destroying tens of thousands of hectares of crops and grazing land in Somalia in the worst invasion in 25 years, the United Nations food agency said on Wednesday, and the infestation is likely to spread further. The locusts have damaged about 70,000 hectares of land in Somalia and neighboring Ethiopia, threatening food supplies in both countries and the livelihoods of farming communities, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said .  An average swarm will destroy crops that could feed 2,500 people for a year, the FAO said . Conflict and chaos in much of Somalia make spraying pesticide by airplane - which the FAO called the "ideal control measure" - impossible, the agency said in a statement. “The impact of our actions in the short term is going to be very limited."  Ashagre Molla, 66, a father of seven from Woldia in the Amhara region 700 km (435 miles) north-east of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, said he had so far received no help...

Prison Gang Clash Leaves 18 Inmates Dead, 16 Injured In Honduras

Image
At least 18 inmates were killed and 16 wounded during a fight between rival gangs in a Honduran penitentiary on Friday, authorities said, in one of the worst recent outbreaks of prison violence in the country.  Two days earlier, the government declared a state of emergency in the prison system, transferring control to security forces in a bid to clamp down on a recent wave of violence. However, speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior military official told Reuters that security forces had not formally taken control of the prison in the northern port city of Tela, before the violence there broke out.  So far the toll from the bloody prison fight was 18 dead, as well as 16 injured, Antonio Coello, a spokesman for security agency FUSINA, told local television. Security forces have since entered the penitentiary to restore order, authorities said. Fights in Honduras' overcrowded prisons are frequent as street gangs vie for control inside the institutions.  Kno...
