Anambra’s Onyinyechi Basil Crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2025

Onyinyechi Basil, who represented Anambra State, has emerged as Miss Universe Nigeria 2025. The 25-year-old was crowned as the winner of the national beauty pageant during the grand finale on Saturday evening in Lagos State. Basil outshone 21 other contestants to succeed the 2024 winner, Chidimma Adetishina. Speaking at the event, the newly crowned queen said,  “I want young girls to know that they can achieve more, and still celebrate their cultural identity.” Following her victory, it was gathered that Basil will be representing Nigeria at the global Miss Universe 2025 competition. Angry Youths Kill Female Food Seller In Niger State Over Alleged Blasphemy Against Prophet Muhammad

A female food vendor, identified simply as Ammaye, has been lynched by angry youths in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad. The incident was said to have occurred at Kasuwan Garba in the council area.   According to eyewitnesses, the face-off began at a nearby community of Igwama where the woman, who is also a Muslim and well known by residents as a food seller, reportedly exchanged words with a young man said to be her nephew.   It was gathered that the young man jokingly told her that he wanted to marry her to “fulfil the Sunnah" and that made the woman to make comments considered blasphemous, causing outrage among the locals.   The matter was said to have been taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where the woman was interrogated and she reportedly repeated what she said earlier.   The development made the District Head to hand her over to security operatives for further investigation, bu...

ANAMBRA MASSACRE: Slain 11 People Laid To Rest In Ebonyi State

The remains of eleven people killed in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, were laid to rest on Thursday in their respective communities in Ebonyi State. The eleven casualties are:  Ikechukwu Nwafor, Ebenezer Nwigbo, Uche Alegu, Monday Ofoke, Chidera Utobo, Akam Okechukwu, Sunday Offim, Sunday Ugada, Clement Ofoke, Chidera Nwogbala and Sunday Nweke. They hailed from Izzi, Ikwo and Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. They were killed on May 30, 2025, by gunmen while they were holding an Ebonyi indigenes’ meeting in Ogboji, Anambra State. Seventeen people were reportedly shot by the gunmen during the attack, leading to 11 deaths, while six people sustained injuries. American Man Gets Life Jail For Murder Of Nigerian-Born Boxer

A U.S. county court has sentenced 37-year-old Nicholas Giroux to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the murder of Nigerian-born amateur boxer, Isaiah Olugbemi. In June 2024, Olugbemi was found dead on the ground with gunshot wounds along Meadowmist Way, Odenton, Maryland, U.S.A. Court documents later revealed that the police obtained surveillance footage showing a white male confronting Olugbemi with a handgun before shooting him multiple times and fleeing the scene on foot. A day later, the police said they interviewed Giroux and he confessed to the crime and was charged with first and second-degree murder. In the ruling on the case on August 26, Richard Trunnell, the judge, sentenced Giroux to life plus 20 years for first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence. The defendant is expected to serve the sentence consecutively in the city’s correctional facility. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, expressed optimism that the state of emergency in Rivers State will end on September 18, 2025. Wike said that, with the expiration, the Rivers State Assembly is expected to resume its duties. He spoke after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election in Rivers State. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had declared emergency rule in Rivers State to prevent the outbreak of a political crisis.   A  42-year old pastor, Samson Ajayi has confessed to raping his 17-year-old daughter for 4 years.   A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State on Thursday, ordered him to be remanded in the Olokuta Correctional Centre.   Ajayi, who confessed to the alleged offence claimed he was under a ‘generational curse’ beyond his comprehension.   The court presided over by Magistrate Taiwo Lebi, remanded the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Facility, pending the issuance of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).   The incident reportedly occurred in his residence at Igoba area, Ondo State.   Ajayi, a father of five was arrested last week, after his wife reported the incident to the police at Igoba.   It was revealed that the victim’s mother who was unaware of the abuse occurring under her roof for over four years, came home on that fateful day and met her matrimonial bed scattered.   It was further learnt that after muc...

  It was tears and anguish as slain businessman, Mr Martins Ifesinachi Onyekesi, also known as Fish Magnate was buried by his family.   His remains were buried yesterday at Eziakpu Village, Ikenga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.   Onyekesi was a fish processor and seller who prominently advertised his trade on social media. He was killed last month, after he was abducted by unknown persons, who later dumped his body in a nearby town, instructing his family to go pick him up.   During his burial on Thursday at Ikenga community, family, friends and sympathizers wailed as his corpse was lowered into mother earth.   The Anambra State Government has issued an order barring schools from mandating pupils and student to write assignments inside textbooks.   According to the government, such a practice is wasteful and unsustainable.    The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, disclosed this on Thursday, August 28, while addressing participants on the third day of a capacity-building workshop organized by the Ministry of Education for private school proprietors and teachers at St. John of God Secondary School, Awka.    Prof. Chuma-Udeh explained that the decision was aimed at making textbooks reusable, particularly for younger siblings of pupils who would need them when they progress to the next class.    She warned that the government would not tolerate non-compliance with the directive and urged parents, teachers, and school administrators to ensure strict adherence.    She further encouraged stakeholders to report cases of d...

  Fenerbahce  have decided to sack Jose Mourinho as their manager. The Turkish club have decided to part ways with Mourinho, a day after they failed to qualify for the Champions League league phase. They were eliminated by Benfica. The 62-year-old has only been with Fenerbahce for eight months and leaves after only two matches this season. Mourinho led the club to a second place place in the Super Lig yesterday. Student Who Won Stormzy Scholarship To Cambridge Found Dead In University Accommodation

  Jordan Keyton, has been found dead.   The Cambridge University student, who was awarded a Stormzy scholarship, was found dead in his university accommodation.   It was gathered that the 23-year-old had overdosed on anti-depressants, a coroner ruled.    Jordan Keyton, 23, was found deceased by a member of staff on March 26th, 2025.   He had joined Downing College Cambridge in October 2019 to study chemistry, the inquest stated.    An obituary for Jordan said during his time at Cambridge University he became a Stormzy scholar, in which he received financial support for his university education.    The scholarship, launched in 2018 by Croydon-based rapper, Stormzy has supported more than 40 black students.    On March 26 this year, Jordan was found deceased by a member of staff who had gone to check on Mr Keyton’s welfare as he had not been seen for several days. World women’s 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, has pulled out of this year’s Diamond League final in Zurich. Amusan qualified for the event as the second-best athlete in the discipline this season, amassing 27 points. She has, however, pulled out of the final and has been replaced by the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton. Two Pastors Arrested In $50 Million Human Trafficking And Fraud Case

In what will come across as a really startling development, two self-proclaimed American religious leaders have been arrested on federal charges for their alleged involvement in a nationwide forced labor and money laundering scheme. CBN Orders That All PoS Terminals Across The Country Must Be Fitted With GPS Tracking Within The Next 60 Days

  The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed that all Point of Sale (PoS) terminals across the country must be geo-tagged within 60 days. This is in a bid to curb fraud and improve oversight of the fast-growing PoS industry.  The directive, which affects licensed operators including Moniepoint, OPay, PalmPay, and commercial banks, requires that every PoS device currently in circulation be registered with its exact GPS coordinates. New PoS devices must also be geo-tagged before activation.  The CBN said any device that fails to meet the requirement by the October 20, 2025 compliance deadline will be deactivated.  “The move is meant to curb fraud, stop the use of cloned or ‘ghost’ terminals, and make it easier to track transactions in real time,”  the CBN stated in a circular released to operators.  Under the new rule, all existing PoS devices must be updated with built-in GPS systems and linked to the National Central Switch, which will monitor their usa...

Japanese Government Denies Nigerian Government’s Claim Of Special Visa Category For Skilled Nigerians

  The Japanese government has said it has no plan to offer special visa category for skilled Nigerians or increase immigration from Africa.   This is coming after the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) last week designated four Japanese cities to strengthen ties with African countries: Imabari with Mozambique, Kisarazu with Nigeria, Sanjo with Ghana, and Nagai with Tanzania.   The program was unveiled during the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Yokohama.   Soon after the announcement, some media outlets and online commentators alleged that the initiative was designed to boost African migration to Japan, with reports claiming Kisarazu would issue special visas for skilled Nigerians.   This followed a statement issued by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information at the State House, announcing that the Japanese government would introduce “a special visa category for highly skilled, innovative, and talented young Nigerians ...

Equatorial Guinea Court Jails President’s Son Over Sale Of National Aircraft

  Ruslan Obiang Nsue, son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has been jailed by a court in Equatorial Guinea.   He was jailed for illegally selling an aircraft belonging to the national carrier.   The court ruled Tuesday, August 26, that Obiang Nsue, 50, a former director of Ceiba Intercontinental, must serve six years in prison unless he reimburses the airline roughly $255,000, in addition to damages and a state fine, according to supreme court press director Hilario Mitogo.   Obiang Nsue was found guilty of selling a Ceiba-owned ATR 72-500 to a Spanish company and pocketing the proceeds.    He was first placed under house arrest in 2023 on the order of his half-brother, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.   The court, however, acquitted him of separate charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.   Obiang Nsue previously served as secretary of state for sports and youth. Police Reportedly Rescue Peller From Alleged Kidnappers

  Nigerian TikTok streamer, Habeeb Hamzat popularly known as Peller has been reportedly rescued after being kidnapped.   He was rescued by men of the Nigerian police.   The popular TikTok streamer was allegedly kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Wednesday during a livestream.   However, in a new update on social media on Thursday morning, Peller’s close associate and colleague, Sandra Benede disclosed that he had been rescued by the police.   Sandra in a live video stated that Peller has been found and is currently with the DPO. “They have seen him. DPO has seen him. They never give details but they have seen him,”  she said.

Equatorial Guinea Court Sentences Baltasar Ebang Engonga To 8 Years In Prison

  Baltasar Ebang Engonga has been sentenced to eight years in prison.   A court in Equatorial Guinea found the former senior government official guilty of embezzling government funds.   Engonga became famous after sex tapes involving him and several women leaked online.   According to Hilario Mitogo, press director of the Supreme Court, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds meant for professional travel expenses for personal use.   He was also fined $220,000.   Engonga, a former head of the national financial investigation agency, was tried alongside five other senior officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds.   The case follows his detention in November, when videos of him with women, including the spouses of other officials, surfaced on social media while investigations into the embezzlement charges were ongoing.
