MTN Explains Service Disruption, Partners Ericsson, Cisco To Fix Hitches

Telecommunications firm, MTN has explained that the service outage experienced at the weekend by millions of its subscribers, across the country was caused by a disruption in the core network, which affected voice and data services.

Recall that precisely on Saturday from 4pm, many users of MTN were unable to make calls, surf the Internet and stream videos. The challenges lasted for several hours. The problem affected subscribers not only in Lagos, but also in other parts of the country.

However, MTN in a statement yesterday, confirmed that subscribers experienced challenges connecting to the network during the afternoon of October 9th.

“The service outage was caused by a disruption in the core network and affected voice and data services. MTN’s technical team was able to rectify the problem in about five hours, allowing service restoration for customers to begin connecting with one another. In addition, time-bound subscriptions are being extended to ensure full value is delivered,” the telecoms firm stated.

Commenting on the service disruption, MTN CEO Olutokun Toriola, while apologizing to all the customers that were affected by the service outage, said; “Our primary mission is to bring you the benefits of a modern connected life, and notwithstanding this unfortunate event, our commitment to providing the reliable service you’ve come to expect over the past twenty years remains unshaken.

“I want to reassure all our stakeholders that our network team is working closely with our network partners Ericsson and Cisco to ensure that the reasons for the disruption are fully investigated, and appropriate action is taken to enhance the resilience of affected systems.”

Going by latest subscriber statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), MTN’s subscriber base has increased to 77.35 million. The telecommunications firm, which recently celebrated 20 years of pioneering telecoms revolution in the country on August 8 has 39 per cent market penetration.
