N o fewer than 10,000 Nigerian girls are forced into prostitution in Burkina Faso.  Nigerian Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Ramatu Ahmed, made the disclosure in an interview with the   News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)   in Ouagadougou yesterday.  She said the victims of the sex-trade were mainly underage girls kept in appalling conditions in Ouagadougou and in mining camps across the West African country.  Ahmed, who has been in Burkina Faso since August 2017, said that over 200 Nigerian girls had been voluntarily repatriated this year.  According to the Ambassador, many of the girls, who were promised jobs in the country and Europe by the human traffickers, are not willing to return home.  “The spate of human trafficking here in Burkina Faso is a big concern to the embassy because at present, we have nothing less than 10,000 Nigerian girls who have been trafficked into Burkina Faso as commercial sex workers. “And most of these girls are underage; m...

West African Leaders Pledge $1Billion To Fight Terrorism In Burkina Faso

Image
The plan, to be funded from 2020 to 2024, was announced at end of the Economic Community Summit of West African States in Ouagadougou, where the ECOWAS nations were joined by Mauritania and Chad.  ECOWAS had decided to mobilise "the financial resources of up to a billion dollars for the fight against terrorism", said Niger's President Mahamadou Issoufou.  The money, paid into a common fund, would help reinforce the military operations of the nations involved -- and those of the joint military operations in the region. Full details of the plan would be presented to the next ECOWAS summit in December. The fight against the rising tide of jihadist violence in the region has so far been hampered by a lack of funds.  The G5 Sahel, a joint taskforce, was created in 2014 to try to tackle the problem, backed by former colonial power France.  From July 2017, it pooled troops from Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger in a bid to drive back the j...

Labour would then follow its recommendations, if it suggested decriminalising some or all drugs including cocaine or heroin. Ms Abbott said: "There is nothing more important than preserving the life of our citizens, our current approach to drugs is simply not doing that." She said the party would also explore the idea of overdose prevention clinics state-run facilities where users would be able to safely inject themselves.
