Tribunal Adjourns Till May 31 As Peter Obi, Labour Party Call First Witness

  The Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have opened their petition against President Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), by calling one witness out of the 50 proposed. Before the witness, who is a lawyer and hails from Anambra testified, counsel to Peter Obi, Jibrin Okutepa, tendered a judgement from a district court in the United States, which reportedly indicted Tinubu and ordered his forfeiture of $460,000 in drug-related offences. The Presidential Election Petitions Court reconvened after a week on Tuesday to begin the definite hearing in the petitions by the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), alongside their parties, challenging Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 election.   The downstream end of the Nigerian petroleum industry has gone into a frenzy as operators respond to the immediate removal of subsidy on petrol with a sharp hike in pump price just as consumers crowded to the petrol stations. Commercial transporters have also hiked their trip fares across the country in response to the development. On his inaugural speech yesterday, the new president, Bola Tinubu, had stated that “petroleum subsidy is gone”. It was gathered in Lagos that some marketers responded by increasing their prices by about 100 percent to N370 from N185 per litre. The official portrait of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu who will be sworn-in as the President today, (Monday, May 29) has been unveiled. This was announced on Monday by one of Tinubu’s aides, Bayo Onanuga. Onanuga while revealing Tinubu’s official portrait via his verified Twitter handle said that he shall be known and called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu henceforth. He wrote; “From today 29 May 2023, he shall be known and called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The glory belongs To Almighty God, the God of all possibilities. And also to us the Nigerian people. After UK Ban, Canada Approves Extension Of Work Permit For Spouses Of Nigerian Students

  The Canadian government on Friday, announced a new policy to speed up the approval of family reunification applications, just a few days after the UK government banned students from Nigeria and other foreign countries on study visas from bringing their families into the country. Announcing the development, Canadian immigration minister, Sean Fraser explained that the new measures were put in place to strengthen family reunification in Canada. It was gathered  that the new system will enable spouses, children, and parents of recent immigrants to join their loved ones in Canada faster. The immigration minister noted that the new policy uses advanced analytics and technology to process Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) applications for family members of permanent residents and citizens in 30 days. According to multiple reports, the former reality TV show star died in Delaware, United States of America on Wednesday May 24, 2023.   The Court of Appeal, Kano Division has granted an order for a stay and suspension of the judgement of a Federal High Court in Kano State sacking the Abia State Governor-elect, Dr. Alex Otti. T he court also granted the governor-elect leave to appeal as an interested party against the judgement of Justice Mohammed Yunusa delivered on May 18. The three-man panel of the court led by Justice Ita Mbaba granted Otti seven days from Saturday within which to file the notice of appeal as an interested party. The other two justices are Justice Uche Onyemenam and Justice Usman Musale. They granted the application after listening to Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), who represented the appellant (Otti) alongside Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ken Ahia and Bashir Muhammad.   Nine years after their last album together, the Nigerian musical duo, Peter and Paul Okoye, known are P-Square, are working on a new album. The identical twins made this known to CNN recently where they also hinted at releasing the album within the year. Since reuniting in 2022, the duo released two singles Jaiye (Ihe g’eme) and Find Somebody) ahead of their ‘100 Cities World Tour,’ which kicked off with North America through Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa last year. Teenage Girl Sets Dormitory Ablaze, Kills 19 Students Over Seized Phone

  A dormitory blaze that killed 19 children in Guyana was set by a teenage student who was upset that her cell phone had been taken away, officials say. The fire broke out at the Mahdia Secondary School in the South American country late on Sunday. A statement from the Guyana Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was “maliciously set.” National Security Adviser Gerald Gouveia told the Associated Press that the suspect in the incident, a pupil at the school, was accused of setting the dorm on fire after being disciplined for having a liaison with an older man. “A female student is suspected of having set the devastating fire because her cellular phone was taken away by the dorm mother and a teacher,” Mark Ramotar, Guyana Police’s communications chief, said in a statement seen by the local news outlet Stabroek News.   The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday, threatened that should its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, “fall in the hands of Nigeria, then Nigeria and her leaders will fall in the hands of Biafra.” In a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafran group said it was disappointed in the United Nations, European Union, African Union and ECOWAS for keeping silent while its leader continued to be detained for almost two years by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The UK government on Tuesday announced a package of measures aimed at international students, including a ban on some family members, as ministers come under growing pressure to cut immigration. Aft er a drop during the pandemic, net migration has been steadily on the rise and is reportedly expected to hit a record high this year. Official figures published last November estimated net migration to June 2022 at just over 500,000. Under the new proposals, only students on postgraduate courses designated as research programmes will be able to bring dependants to the UK while they study. Overseas students will be prevented from switching “out of the student route into work routes” before their studies have been completed.
