PDP Confirms The Death Of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed the death of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly collapsed in his office and was pronounced dead after being rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said the deputy governor slumped at about 1:30 PM, prompting an immediate emergency response from aides and security personnel.

He was taken to FMC Yenagoa, where hospital sources say he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Local media described tense scenes at the hospital as senior officials and family members gathered for updates.

The PDP’s national secretariat expressed “deep shock” at the sudden loss and praised Ewhrudjakpo as a principled party man whose public service was defined by integrity and commitment.

The party called on members and the people of Bayelsa to pray for the repose of his soul and extended condolences to his family and the state government.

Preliminary accounts from hospital and family sources, cited by several outlets, suggested the collapse may have been linked to a suspected cardiac event, though doctors had not publicly confirmed a cause of death at the time of reporting. Officials have urged restraint while medical and family statements are awaited.

Governor Douye Diri, state officials and political leaders were reported to be at the FMC and other locations where relatives and aides were gathering.

The sudden passing of Ewhrudjakpo, a prominent voice in Bayelsa politics, has sent shockwaves across the Niger Delta political community and prompted immediate calls for official statements from both the state government and security agencies.

Ewhrudjakpo, born on 5 September 1965, served as Bayelsa State’s Deputy Governor under Governor Douye Diri from February 2020 until his death.

He was a former Senator representing Bayelsa West and previously held ministerial and state-level appointments, including a stint as Commissioner for Works.

Ewhrudjakpo was recognised for his technocratic approach and legal training, and has been a long-standing member of the PDP.
