Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers Demand His Release, Submit Nine Judgements To AGF

Members of the legal team of the detained leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have submitted a full list of judgements in the matter to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja.

The leader of the team, Barr Nnaemeka Ejiofor, told journalists on Thursday that the judgements were from both domestic and international courts directing the release of the IPOB leader.

He said the decision to forward all the pronouncements was in response to the statement credited to the AGF that he was not aware of Kanu’s case and that his fate would be resolved by the court.

Ejiofor also asked President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu and respect the various judgements, directing the IPOB leader’s release.

On May 24, Fagbemi said the offence of the detained IPOB leader is a difficult one and can only be resolved by a competent court of law.

He also pointed out that there was a remarkable difference between Kanu’s case and that of Omoyele Sowore.

Days earlier, Kanu’s lawyers filed a preliminary objection at the Federal High Court Abuja, asking the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, to decline jurisdiction to proceed with the trial against him.

Part of the issue for determination, was whether the court has the jurisdiction to try Kanu for any, or all the offences charged against him in Counts 1, 2, 4,5 and 8,  to quash the said counts on the ground that the law which the said counts were predicated, was unconstitutional.

Justice Nyako dismissed the request by Kanu for the restoration of his revoked bail and the removal from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), to a house arrest or prison custody.

Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021 when he was arrested in Kenya and has since resumed terrorism-related trial levelled against him by the Federal Government.

Over 150 Women Rights Group Call For Release Of Chioma Okoli

  A  coalition of women’s rights organizations, Womanifesto, has called for the immediate release of Chioma Okoli, a woman who has been detained since September 2023 for her alleged defamation against Erisco Foods Limited. In a statement signed by over 150 organizations, including Women Advocates and Research Documentation Centre (WARDC), Purple Woman Foundation, and ActionAid Nigeria, the group condemned the continued detention of Okoli, which has resulted in the loss of her pregnancy and livelihood. The group also criticized Erisco for prioritizing profits over the health and wellbeing of Nigerians, and called on the government to investigate the company’s products and labels. They demanded justice for Okoli and an end to the harassment and intimidation of women who speak out against injustice.

Immigration Officer Bags 7-Year Jail Term Over Passport Fraud

  The  Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has secured the conviction of Quadri Ismail Adeyinka, a staff of the Nigeria Immigration Service for committing travel passport fraud. ICPC  arraigned the convict before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Apo, Abuja, on a four-count charge bordering on gratification, conferment of corrupt advantage and cheating contrary to extant provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000 and the Penal Code Act. Police Arrest Uzodinma’s Ex-Aide Chinasa Nwaneri In Imo State

  Former Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodinma on Special Duties, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri has been arrested by a special team of Police detectives in Imo, the state’s capital. Nwaneri was until recently, one of Uzodimma’s most trusted aides who had been with him for over fifteen years. Sources said Nwaneri was arrested at RockView Hotel in Owerri on Saturday and taken to the headquarters of the State Police Command. According to the source who pleaded anonymity, Nwaneri was escorted back to his hotel room during which it was thoroughly searched before he was returned to the police command.
